Red, Solo and Whoopi at the beach (also wet and sandy!)
(left to right)
This is most of Carole Eklund's "S" litter-Calia Simply Red, Calia Sacre Bleu, and Calia Sister Act (Calia Skyhunter's Supernova, CD is with Sue Lytwinic) and an example of how fate and destiny can sometimes sneak up on a person! Originally, none of these dogs were to be living with me! Red was living with Michael before we got married, Solo was living with Jim before he died, and Whoopi was living with Carole until she fell in love with our son, Toby, and "adopted" him. Keeping 3 high-energy dogs happy, by providing them with suitable outlets for their physical and mental abilities is a responsibility and a pleasure we assumed when we welcomed them into our lives.
For any person concerned about adopting an older dog, or acquiring an adult dog (versus a puppy) I can merely point to my own life experiences, which have all been positive. My one-and-only soulmate dog (Ruffi) was given to me when she was 4 to blaze new paths for Belgians in agility competitions. Solo came into my life at age 5-sad, confused and depressed after the death of his first owner, and now loves me wholeheartedly and without reservation-as though no other person for him ever exisited. Chibi came from the pound, was a physical and emmotional wreck, but went on to become an amazing therapy dog and we enjoyed many years together. I remind anyone wanting a puppy to remember that it will be 2-3 YEARS BEFORE A PUPPY BECOMES A STABLE AND MANNERED DOG, requiring many hours of training, time and effort on your part. An older dog has often mastered many of the basic home and social skills you will need to teach, and is mentally ready to learn more challenging behaviors and can concentrate more effectively then a younger dog. Physically, a Belgian over the age of 2 will be ready to participate in sports or intense stress activities immediately. Please consider all the many advantages of getting an older dog, especially a Belgian, which take a long time to mature, and live to an active and healthy old age.
